As a youth, Duran worked alongside his Filipino father in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Unable to find employment other than as a farm laborer, Duran joined the Marines during the escalating conflict in Vietnam. Upon his return in 1968, he worked the canneries in Alaska for several seasons, and then upon the advice of his brother, New York artist Robert Duran, he enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute. As president of the student body, student rep in the Diego Rivera gallery selection committee, and as a teaching assistant, Duran organized programs to increase the enrollment of minorities in the arts elite.

Relocating in the mid-'70s to New York City, Duran joined The National Park Service, working on culturally significant monument sites such as Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. He was a member of the team that re-opened Ellis Island in 1976.

While based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Duran exhibited at SOMArts Gallery, Berkeley Art Commission Gallery, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Now located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, George Duran continues to paint with a modernist approach using contemporary art materials, exploring traditional native designs and color field theory.
